Smoking Cessation: Barriers and Available Methods

Tobacco use is the leading global cause of avoidable death worldwide and a key modifiable risk factor for the development of a range of diseases, including cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and some cancers (1-3). In the 1960s, the US Surgeon General and American Heart Association issued reports warning of the dangers of smoking on fatal coronary artery disease (4-6).
